“Valentine’s Day is a time of reflection for me – pondering the true value of what exists in my life. My grandmother and grandfather met at a Valentine’s Day dance at the International Institute of Boston. Without that chance of meeting, my family wouldn’t be here.” says Boston interior designer Tiffany LeBlanc.
Our modern lives are often squeezed between obligations and work. Material goods seem secondary when compared to what is really important. The best gift any one of us can give is the gift of time and being present when we’re together.
My husband and I find that traveling with our children gives us memorable, special times that often seem to elude us as we race against our everyday schedules. Looking back at the life we’ve created over the last 19 years, I’m struck by the quiet moments together, remembering how much we truly trust and support one another in our pursuit of a shared life. I can truly say that these moments are the most satisfying aspects of my life. I wish I could bottle up all of the laughter and fun moments with our children, who seem to be growing up too fast.
This Valentine’s Day, I would suggest planning more trips together, taking more time away from work, and actively seeking out the life you want to have. Explore your interests and live with an open heart. Rather than surfing the web for a material gift, make a small arrangement of your favorite photos of times shared or leave “love notes” for your family members. Remember to give hugs of acknowledgment and appreciation. Best of all, don’t forget to say the most important words – I love you – as often as you can.” – Tiffany.
